How do you Voodoo? – JANICE HORTON

How do you Voodoo is a 70 page short story (Novevella) by Janice Horton.

Loveless fashion model Nola Nichols thinks being beautiful is a curse; that is until she is cursed and her looks begin to fade just a week before the most important photo shoot of her career.

Nola rejects all rational explanation on what might be causing her lost looks and decides she has to find a way to get uncursed. This imaginative quest takes her from the Caribbean to Glasgow’s own City of the Dead. Along the way, she finds herself taking part in a rather unconventional funeral, involved in a voodoo ritual, reveals one or two unrests in her own past and falls madly in love with a doctor. Erm, that would be a witch doctor, right…?

How do you Voodoo? is a story, that like all Janice’s others books, with strong characters that you feel  you know straight away. A little bit of humour and a plot that makes you want to keep reading on. At just 70 pages, this is a very quick but very enjoyable read. Nola is self-centred and totally wrapped up in her own world until something happens on her flight home. Suddenly she has to work out what is important in life and what is superficial.

I’m a big fan of Janice’s previous work so was very excited when I heard this new story was coming out. I’m not a huge fan of short stories as you are just getting to like the characters and the flow of the story, when suddenly you are turning to the last page. However, Janice is such a great writer that so much plot is wrapped into these few pages.

  1. Hi Lou – I’m really delighted you enjoyed reading How Do You Voodoo? I got the idea for this novella from an incident I witnessed on a flight – of course my imagination took over straight afterwards and the result was this story from Nola’s (rather selfish) point of view. But as you found out – she does have a redeeming side after all! I really appreciate you taking the time to read and review and thanks for your lovely comments Lou!

    Janice xx
