The Summer of Secrets – ALISON LUCY

The Summer of Secrets by Alison Lucy and published by Canvas

One heady summer. Three big secrets.

1989. Newlyweds Danny and Harriet arrive at their honeymoon paradise in the Caribbean. Days later, Harriet returns home.

Danny is left distraught but finds comfort in the arms of two women. Nine months later, three baby girls are born…

2010. Megan leaves her childhood sweetheart behind in the UK to go in search of her long-lost father. Miles from home and temptation is at every corner.

Esmé, a Mexican beauty, married Miguel at fifteen. By unlocking the secrets of her past, can she shed the shackles of her enforced marriage?

Claudia has led a life of privilege but she’s never known what it feels like to be loved. Could David be the answer?

Three women set off on an adventure to uncover the secrets surrounding their missing father. It may be the only way to lay their demons to rest but seeking out the truth could tear their lives apart.

This is an easy to read book following the lives of three young ladies who without knowing cross each other paths whilst all trying to reach the same common goal.

Very well written, not sure you get to “like” particularly the leads however, you appreciate their decisions and I was very pleased with how they each ended their stories. You flow through the story from the perspective of each of the three girls which works really well. I would say that this is the perfect beach read!

Thank you Canvas for sending me a copy of this book. I look forward to reading Alison’s next book.

I was very pleased to be able to ask Alison the following questions:-

1) The Summer of Secrets is your latest novel … what or who helped give you that push to actually start writing?
I have always enjoyed telling stories so writing happily is only a case of having the right idea to run with.  Writing only gets difficult when I have no clue what comes next, at which point it’s probably time to step away and do something else for a while and mull over my plot (or lack thereof).  Answering questions like these is a great distraction because it reminds me that I am doing what I love.

2) The book has a large connection withMexico, is it somewhere you know very well or somewhere you just researched?
Mexico made an enormous impression on me when I was still a teenager and I have been back several times since. I would love to spend more time there, and I definitely want to retire there when I am old, probably to the Sea of Cortez where all the beatnik American retirees keep their boats.  Summer of Secrets begins on the Caribbean coast in the late eighties, when the resort of Cancun was still quite new and so it was a real treat to research the evolution of a world class resort and the history of that part ofMexico.

3) How do you manage to write and also run a family? When do you find the time to write?
My youngest child wakes up at 5am and has done for the last two years.  He will improve with age (fingers crossed) but it’s amazing how much stuff one can get done around the house in those pre-dawn hours.  My days are long enough to fit in a couple of hours writing, and I really think writing every day is the key to it.  Also I am not much of a housekeeper and I refuse to iron.

4) What is your next book about and when can we expect to see it?
My next book will be out next year. It’s a British woman’s roadtrip across America to get to a wedding.  I love America, but no matter what our plans are we always end up driving across a desert somewhere listening to country music.  It’s like it’s required.

5) What has been your favourite read in the last 12 months?
I thoroughly enjoyed Louise Bagshawe’s Desire, it was unexpectedly brilliant.  I would also like to mention After You by Natascha McElhone, one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read.

Alison will be hosting a live Twitter Interview ‘twinterview’  on the 23rd May between 5 – 6pm (UK time). Why not join her @AlisonLucy
