Black Swan Rising – LEE CARROLL

Black Swan Rising is the latest book written by Lee Carroll and the first in a trilogy.

Garet James is a designer of jewellry in New York. She stumbles across a strange antiques shop whilst looking for shelter on a very raining day and slightly lost. The moment she sets foot into the shop and meets John Dee, everything about her life changes all thanks to a silver box with a symbol of a swan that matches exactly to the ring her dead mother gave her. As soon as she manages to open the box strange things start to happen.  When Garet begins to investigate, she learns that she has been pulled into a prophecy that is hundreds of years old, and opening the box has unleashed an evil force onto the streets of Manhattan and the world at large.

Her deceased mother had desperately tried to protect her from her true identity. Generations of women in Garet’s family, including her beloved mother, suffered and died at the hands of this prevailing evil. Does Garet possess the power to reclaim the box and defeat this devastating force?

Whom can Garet trust to guide her?  The only way to stop the evil is for Garet to do it. Is she capable?

The book is very written and quick paced if you are a fan of urban fantasy novel, I’m sure that you would enjoy this. unfortunately,  it really wasn’t for me. I liked Garet’s character in the beginning of  the book  but the book just didn’t hold my attention especially from the middle to second half of the story which is purely a personal preference and not a criticism of the book in any way. (Wasn’t overly impressed with the last couple of chapters.)  Packed with lots of Demons, atmospheric fog clouds, Vampires and otherworld creatures.   This is the first in a Trilogy, unfortunately I don’t think I will be finding out what happens next to Garet and her friends! (did love the cover of the book mind!!)

I read this as my 4th and final selection from the Transworld Reading challenge. Thank you for sending me a copy.

  1. Oooh shame you didn’t like Lou. I loved it 🙂 and am quite a way through the second in the trilogy ‘The Watchtower’. Enjoying that too! Good we all have different tastes – wouldn’t the world be a boring place otherwise! x x

  2. An honest and well balanced review – not so easy to do when you find the book isn’t for you. Well done Lou x

  3. I agree with Sue. “Honest and well-balanced” is how we hope all reviews will be. Good job, as always!

  4. I read this book and share your opinion. I don’t really like reading urban fantasy, but for the transworld challenge I decided to read four different books and this was one of them.
